Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference Fellowship

I’m very happy to announce that I was awarded a Fellowship in Fiction for this year’s Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference in Middlebury, Vermont. I was a participant there back in 1997 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m excited to return as a fellow who will help facilitate a writers’ workshop. I’ll also get to have a reading and there will be many opportunities for networking, fellowship and the like. The grounds are gorgeous–lovely woods for hiking and a quaint town nearby. Looking forward to this in late August.

I’m so happy you wrote to me–it makes things easier to have someone you know at the conference beforehand. I was there before in 1997 and thoroughly enjoyed it. What genre will you be working on? Where are you located? And how did you find me?

Do you know which poet you’ll be working with? I haven’t heard who I’ll be assigned to yet. I am very much looking forward to Bread Loaf though before then I’ll be traveling to the NJ/NYC area in July for booksignings and am very excited about that. I have a friend who’s from Yuma; she’s teaching in Chicago now–Mar¡a de Jesus Estrada.

I haven’t been assigned a workshop leader yet. I think they’re still figuring that stuff out. Or maybe they’re waiting until everyone has paid their tuition. Ha.
I can’t wait for BL. This is my first conference. Wait, does AWP count? Probably not. They don’t workshop your work at AWP.

If BL is your first conference then I think you picked the right one. I need to make my travel arrangements but have a trip before that I still haven’t booked so I’ve got to get to it.
What poets do you read/admire?
I’ll be attending in fiction this summer and really looking forward to my first summer on the Loaf. Looking forward to meeting all of you there!

I’m also attending the workshop as a fiction scholar (found you through Google – what else?). It’s my first time and as I’ve not yet attended an MFA program, I don’t know anyone who has gone before or who is going this year. Thanks to your blog for connecting us. It’s great to “meet” you. I just found out that I’m working with Ann Hood. Do you know who you’re assigned to yet?
I was just in MA–my friend took me from Rockport to Salem and Marblehead on Saturday and it was just gorgeous.

Hi. I don’t think this will sound too weird. My girlfriend applied for a work-study scholarship this year. Last year (the year before?), right at the deadline and got waitlisted. I’d love for her to attend this year. She’s super talented, and I fully expect her to one day have a book jacket with a quote comparing her to Updike.
What I’m wondering is this: Would anyone be willing to share with me something (ideally, fiction) they submitted, getting them admission to the conference? She may not hear back until May, but if I saw a manuscript that landed an admission or scholarship, I might be able to take a stab at whether or not I should keep holding my breath.

You should check out the Breadloaf Writers’ conference facebook page–there are at least two. That’s the place where you can ask questions directly to many of the scholars and participants. I went as a contributor the first time many years ago but last year I was a fellow so I had to submit my book for consideration. I wish your girlfriend; it’s a wonderful experience and if she can afford, it might help if she went as a contributor.
